Today’s smart home is a reality thanks to the iPhone

The iPhone as the “Ultimate Digital Device” as coined by Steve Jobs in 2007 became much, much more than even he could have predicted. Today, the iPhone (and modern smartphones) has powerful apps, voice control, proximity automation, the list goes on. And all of those features, based in a hand-held device, have largely solved the decades-old challenges of creating a (real) smart home.

Meet Qube: The First Affordable Wi-Fi Color-Changing Smart Bulb (Review)

Smarter Home Life gets many, many emails and comments from its fans about the price of home automation products, and specifically, connected (or smart) lighting products. Some require a purchase of a starter kit with a hub, and others are à la carte but are upwards of $60 per lamp. Why is this stuff so darn expensive? Bluetooth 5 adoption as official specification will bring faster, longer-range devices to the smarter home

The Bluetooth Special Interest Group (SIG) recently announced the adoption of their latest specification, Bluetooth 5, which offers greater range, data bandwidth and transfer speeds. This is a win-win for the rapidly-growing Internet of Things and smarter home industries, as it can transform Bluetooth-only devices into more major players instead of being treated more like second-class citizens of this new world of connected devices.

August launches new HomeKit-enabled Smart Lock, upgrade offer coming in November for existing owners
