LIFX brightens its smart lighting with HomeKit support

Just in time for "iPhone Season", LIFX has completed the work to make their smart bulbs work with Apple's HomeKit platform and the Siri voice assistant. Apple and LIFX fans, rejoice!

First announced in late 2016, certain technical challenges caused delays in the rollout of HomeKit support for the then-new 3rd generation LIFX products released in the fall of 2016. Those products contained the hardware required for HomeKit compatibility but needed software updates to make the connections. The reason this is significant news is the fact that LIFX is the most popular Wi-Fi smart lighting platform. (You don't need a special hub or starter kit to make these lights work.)

For the Apple HomeKit faithful, the wait is officially over, and your LIFX products are ready for an app and firmware update to make them HomeKit-compatible! Specifically, these are the LIFX products that can now be upgraded to include HomeKit functionality: LIFX A19, LIFX BR30, LIFX+ A19, LIFX+ BR30, LIFX Downlight and LIFX GU10. This year's new LIFX Mini smart bulbs, which begin shipping in October, will be HomeKit-compatible out-of-the-box. LIFX Z smart strips, along with 1st and 2nd-gen LIFX products are not compatible with HomeKit at this time. The official statement from LIFX on those products is that "We’re working with Apple to better understand what software authentication in iOS 11 means for our past, current, and future products and will update when we know more."

As with all HomeKit-enabled products, once you add LIFX smart lights to your HomeKit home in iOS you'll be able to control them like any other HomeKit device. This includes via Apple's Home app on iOS and watchOS and third-party HomeKit apps across iOS, watchOS and tvOS. Control via Siri is possible on iPhone, iPod touch, iPad, Apple Watch and Apple TV. You can directly control and adjust your LIFX lights, and add them to HomeKit scenes and automations to create some true smart home magic.

The update process is pretty straightforward and involves a LIFX app upgrade, bulb(s) upgrade, retrieving the bulb HomeKit setup code(s) and adding the bulbs to HomeKit, which can all be done via the newly-updated LIFX app. LIFX has a detailed support document on the process, and you can check out our video of the process embedded above.

Disclosure: LIFX has supplied lighting products to Smarter Home Life for review and testing purposes.
